Nicholas Roeg's The Witches is, in my opinion, the only adaptation of a beloved Roald Dahl book that has succeeded. Not in being a good movie mind you, Matilda, the original Willy Wonka, Fantastic Mr. Fox were great, and James And The Giant Peach was excellent, but this one was the one to actually capture the twisted, scrumptious vernacular that Dahl lovingly poured onto his pages, and translate that into a piece of celluloid that retains that extremely specific style and delicious penmanship that made the man who he is. The Witches is his darkest novel, the only one to border on outright horror, and Roeg's knows how to play up the freaky aspects, utilizing grotesquely wonderful practical effects and a mischievously nasty tone. A grandmother (golden age Norwegian actress Mai Zetterling) tells her grandson (Jaren Fisher) eerie stories of 'the witches' terrifying creatures with long nails, bald heads and a penchant for killing children in nasty ways. They wear wigs and get all prim and pretty to disguise themselves, but, as granny says, there are certain specific clues which give them away. The boy inevitably has encounters with them though, and for a film based on a children's book, they sure will give you nightmares. The gore is spared, the effects are gruesome yet still not that bad, it's just the situational dread that gets to you. Pretty soon while on vacation, he finds himself at the same hotel that the witches hold their annual convention at, straight into the proverbial hornet's nest. After being spotted, they cruelly change him into a mouse, and with the help of his grandmother, must try to eliminate the evil threat for good. They find themselves at odds with the maniacal Grand High Witch (a strutting, acid tongued Anjelica Huston) the tyrannical ringleader of their disgusting race. The only complaint I have is that the filmmakers tacked on a syrupy, cathartic ending that the book most certainly did not have. Ditch that, and you'd have a near perfect flick. Dahl wrote a dark, delightful fable with monstrous elements, rooted in the fierce love between the grandmother and boy, like a beacon of humanity amongst monsters. Roeg's vision reflects that lovingly, recalls the book, and faithfully brings it to macabre, spooky life.

The witches 1990 cast. The witches cast 2020. If you think about it the right way, Sam and Colby's dreams, and the tarot cards matched up. Colby was at first walking through, then broke out into a run. Eagerly desiring to know what was at the end of the path, if there was one. Which you could expect thanks to the death card. Sam was running, chasing him, Desperate to stop his best friend from going further. Jake, Corey, and quite especially Sam were filled with the anxiety that that could have been the end of his chapter. The end of his story. The end of his life. But it was only in their mind did they fear Colby was dead. When in reality he was alive. All of this happened through total chaos. People have made connections between their dreams and losing Colby, but I think this goes even deeper.

Damn, I can't get over how good the phone footage ghost scare was. The ambient atmosphere, the mysterious white presence slowly walking towards the camera, and alice's quote foreshadowing her fate really did make me back away from my screen. Scares like these are special to me, cause they can't really be experienced in a normal horror cinema. You gotta be cooped up in a dark room with fullscreen on to really get that feel. The witches ending. I watched this movie last night while wearing surround sound headphones. I was too unnerved to walk through my house to go to bed when the movie ended. This is hilariously bad, which is sad as the book deserves so much more than whatever this is. You can hear how panicked Sam sounds when they lost Colby. Friendship at its finest.

The witches of breastwick. This entire movie feels closer to a scary acid trip than a children's film. Kinda disappointed that this is gonna be more of a comedy than a kids horror movie. But it still looks pretty decent so far. I hope the ending is how it is in the book. The ending was the best part of the story as it meant that it didn't have an entirely happy finish. The effects the witches had on the children didn't reverse, and was therefore more terrifying. The point of the story was supposed to be a cautionary tale, in which the consequences of your actions are permanent. To get kids to not talk to strangers as its dangerous. Hmm, I love the cast for the grandma and boy (they seem to have more character and emotions for each other. Not sure on the witches or all the cgi mice. I've seen thousands of horror movies, name one you consider obscure I've probably seen it, and my top three horror, pure horror that actually scare me are 1. Poughkeepsie Tapes 2. Lake Mungo 3. Noroi The Curse Now if I add other flicks like say sci fi horror or body horror then yes the list changes, The Thing being #1 always, along with Evil Dead and other films we all know and love, but movies that have actually sent a shiver up my spine for one reason or another are those three, I suggest if you like horror movies you check them out.
